YOUNG CHANGEMAKERS EDITION

A busy Monday morning. Rongai town in the outskirts of Nairobi City is dusty as usual. I am getting into the offices of Vijana Economic Front Party where this interview is slated for.  After the temperature screening at the gate, I head straight to the Office of The Secretary General of VEF Party. The dark and hunk PDG Antony Massu welcomes me with his heavy laughs. Of course he reminds me of how we first met in 2019 in the line of activism. So there is this one day I decided to attend demos. It was actually my first time, having been an activist in high school, I thought I would replicate the same in the outside world. It was during one of the demonstrations of students of Multimedia University of Kenya along Magadi Road. Antony Massu was captaining the demonstrations chanting songs of freedom. I got excited and joined in, carrying placards of Haki Yetu. A few minutes later, a contingent of Anti Riot Police arrived hurling teargas canisters to the demonstrators.  Having seen the images of police brutality before, I was very terrified as the police came nearer and nearer. At this moment, I pleaded with Massu to assist me escape the chaos. He lead me away to his house where I stayed for the entire day. That is how I knew this gentleman and since then, he has remained a close confidant and my biggest political advisor.  We remembered these memories as I took my seat at his well decorated office. Due to his schedule, I had to be quick in my interview. He already received four calls demanding him to attend a youth engagement forum.  Straight away we headed to the questions.

YOUR CTRITICS ACCUSE YOU FOR PRACTISING POLITICS OF THUGERRY, GOONMANSHIP AND VIOLENCE. CAN YOU CONFIRM OR DENY THESE STATEMENTS?

Thuggery,  goonmanship and violence are all illegal activities. If I were as violent as my political detractors say out there, I would be in jail right now. It is a fact that I have never even stepped in police cells. So those statements are malicious and without any verifiable details. These are the same people who claim that I was suspended from the university, something that has never happened. It is great also to state that for me, whenever I believe in something, I use all possible tactics to see it through but I do not advocate for violence at all.

GIVE US YOUR BRIEF INTRODUCTION AND LIFE STORY?

I was born in 1996. I joined boarding school at 6.  I studied my primary school at Pesoda Academy from 2004 to 2011 when I sat my KCPE and scored 415 marks. I was admitted to Maseno School but due to financial constraints, I settled for St. Joseph’s School, Rapogi in Migori County. I did my KCSE and got A- of 79 points. From there, I got admitted to Multimedia University of Kenya to pursue a Degree in Journalism and I am graduating in two months.

YOU HAVE DECLARED INTEREST IN VYING FOR LANGATA PARLIAMENTARY SEAT. IS THIS DECLARATION SERIOUS AND IF SO, WHAT ARE YOUR CHANCES LOOKING AT THE HEAVY MONIED AND INFLUENTIAL OPPONENTS GOING FOR THE SAME SEAT?

Many people who know me think that I am vying for the seat due to my over ambitious nature. Well, that is not true. I have lived in Langata and I know the void of leadership that has been in Langata for a long time even during the days of Raila Odinga as the MP. The people of Langata therefore are hungry for adequate representation in the parliament. I believe that I am the one to close this void in Langata and I am very serious in my quest. I will not dwell on my opponents but there is so much hype that some personalities have beefed on themselves and they think that will translate to votes. I might not be having the name, but when the Returning Officer will be announcing the next MP of Langata, that name will be PDG Antony Massu.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SINCE YOU STARTED POLITICS?

We have created a culture in this country where people have criminalized civil disobedience, universal suffrage and exercising freedom of speech, all which are rights enshrined in the constitution. I pride myself having sensitized university students that they should not cower whenever their rights are bulldozed. Back in Multimedia University, I led a negotiations with the school management that harmonized the fee structure and the period in which a student can take to pay fees. Today, you can see how schools like University of Nairobi are struggling with the issue of fees, but for MMU it is no longer an issue. I hold this as my biggest achievement.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOOD, BAD AND UGLY MEMORIES IN POLITICS ?

To start with the good;
There is a time my university acted in a way to deny me my constitutional rights. I sued them before the court of Law and won that case. This is my fondest memory so far.
To the bad;
There was a time my house was broken into by my political detractors and they stole my valuable and expensive property. That was bad and humiliating.
To the ugly;
There was a time I insisted that students must attend a certain function for free. The students union wanted to cash in the function but I stood my ground. Lincoln, I was almost smashed with a rungu. I will never forget.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE AMBITIONS?

I look forward to serve my constituents in Langata positively and effectively. My future is largely concentrated in Langata. I am a pan Africanist and in the near future I will do a lot of pan Africanism politics.

YOU ARE A STUDENT JOURNALIST. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON YOUR DEGREE AND WILL YOU PRACTISE IT?

To me, Journalism is an avenue for change because it gives you a better position to interact with the masses. I love rhumba and I will soon open a rhumba music radio station in line with my career.

WHAT DO YOU DO AT YOUR FREE TIME?

I play chess most of the time. I also read books. I have developed a liking for tennis as an outdoor activity.

YOUR FAVORITE DISH?

Meat , meat and more meat. Any form of meat, whether boiled meat, cooked one, nyama choma. I will soon invite you for a nyama choma feast so that you can enjoy great dishes.

BIGGEST FEAR?

Under achieving my potential.

YOU HAVE A GREAT PERSONALITY, AND PROBABLY SOME OF THE FEMALE READERS MIGHT NEED TO KNOW YOU IN PERSONAL LEVEL AND TO AVOID MY QUESTIONS, DECLARE YOUR STATUS.

I am single and that is out of choice. At the moment my focus is on my goals and I do not want to indulge in wife searching right now. Fall of some great men has been because of over indulging on women, and if I am to achieve my potential, I have to keep myself safe from that.

DREAM DESTINATION?

I attended an Italian sponsored nursery school. Since then, I have loved Italian stuff. So well, if I am to get into adventure, then definitely I will go to Italy.

FINAL WORDS?
To the youths, we have to believe in ourselves more. I urge the youths to vote wisely in the upcoming general elections. I know that the young people of this country have the potential to achieve political revolution through the ballot.

              THANK YOU SO MUCH PDG FOR HOSTING ME PDG.
                                            THE END.
